Dali Basu

-Classical Indian (Odissi) Dancer

About Dali Basu

Dali Basu was born and was brought up in Ottawa, Canada, where she was first introduced to Orissi, Kathak and Bharatanatyam. As a child, her training led up to her arangetram in Bharatanatyam under Dr. Vasanthi Srinivasan. As a young adult, she trained in Odissi and Kathak under Smt. Saveeta Sharma, while completing her university studies.

Upon her graduation with honours in computer science, Dali set out to follow her dreams. She came to receive her dance training in India, aided by a prestigious scholarship awarded by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. Dali has since been awarded this scholarship for a second time.  In New Delhi, Dali received extensive training with renowned Orissi Guru Smt. Aloka Paniker.  She has performed several solo performances in India and North America including Kolkata, New Delhi, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlantic City.

Dali broadened her dance experience by receiving training in the Kathak dance style from Pandit Birju Maharaj, Kalpana Verma and Mamata Maharaj. She also trained with Guru Janmejoy Saibabu in the athletically challenging martial art form of Mayurbhanj Chhou.  Dali is also learning the flute under the tutelage of Shri Kailash Sharma.

As Dali establishes herself in India and abroad, she is imparting her knowledge and skills to others like her, who wish to connect with their heritage through this graceful form of art.  At the same time, with enthusiasm she welcomes others who wish to enter this beautiful world of Odissi, a world that means everything to Dali Basu.
